Despite us making the booking for the wrong day, the manager honored our booking and didn&'t charge us anything extra despite being a day late. Luckily there was a room available for us the following night. The hostel is large and nicely located near everything in greymouth. Guests are given an hour free net and 2nd drink free at the bar, nice perks. Rooms are extremely comfortable and the doubles have sinks inside the room.

The owners are really nice, they offered us some no cost pastries upon arrival and gave us a full rundown on items to do in greymouth. The cooking area is also extremely properly equipped. The lounge area is also warm and cosy with the fireplace. We woke up late for take a look at and they still let us use the cooking area facilities soon after :)

This is the old Duke of Marlborough Hotel just off center of Greymouth, and it&'s so handy to the city also as to the train/bus. The extremely best feature of the hostel is the host, Dory, who goes out of his way to create guest feel comfortable. He even brought bakery goods (pies, sandwiches) at 4 p. m. , and soup at 7 p. m. and has toast/jam and there were other baked goods for breakfast. so he basically feeds the crowd! He also keeps the coal stove stoked, so the lounge/eating area is comfortable. I stayed there on a miserably cold/wet day, but he gave me an extra duvet plus a warm water bottle, and there is a small room heater. so I was quite comfortable, plus he upgraded my room at no charge. Dory and his wife own the old hotel, and they have painted it in bright, cheery colors, and make visitors feel at home. The kitchen is quite good. tiled work surfaces at a very good height for cooking, very good stoves/microwave/ toaster/water boiler, etc. and a lot of free tea, coffee, sugar, etc. Actually, given all the very good free food, one need not cook at all in this hostel!
